PAS DE CHEVAL

Pas de Cheval is a duet choreographed by Andrea Costanzo Martini and performed together with Francesca Foscarini, conceived for two performers who are no longer very young. Inspired by the figure of the horse—a symbol of grace, strength, and freedom—the work explores the parallel between the animal and the dancer-performer: beings that are admired, yet subjected to fatigue, discipline, and power dynamics. On stage, the two performers move in silence, embodying trained horses, while a soundscape of recorded voices accompanies their bodies. These are their own whispers, chasing and overlapping one another: laments, confessions, and small ironies about the condition of the contemporary performer. From complaints about hotel rooms and low salaries to physical exhaustion and the power games of the dance system. With lightness and humor, the duet lays bare the contradictions of live performance, questioning the price one must pay to earn the audience’s love and to survive—also economically—within the system. A work that plays between training and freedom, virtuosity and vulnerability.
